The amount of coffee grounds needed to make 12 cups of coffee can vary depending on your desired strength and the type of coffee maker you are using. However, as a general guideline, we recommend and utilize a 1:17 coffee-to-water ratio in all of our cafes. In other words, you will want to use 1 gram of coffee to 17 grams of water.

HOW DOES THE 1:17 COFFEE TO WATER RATIO TRANSLATE TO 12 CUPS OF COFFEE?

Employing the 1:17 coffee-to-water ratio might seem confusing at first, but in actuality, the math is really quite simple - especially once grams have been converted to ounces.

HOW MUCH WATER DO I NEED TO MAKE 12 CUPS OF COFFEE?

Asssuming that you're making twelve 8oz. cups of coffee you will need 2,721 grams of water. This translates to 96 ounces of water.

HOW MUCH COFFEE GROUNDS DO I NEED TO MAKE 12 CUPS OF COFFEE?

2,721 grams of water divided by 17 equals 160 grams, which is the amount of properly-ground coffee we need to make twelve 8oz. cups of coffee. Converted to ounces, 160 grams of coffee grounds is equal to 5.6 ounces of properly-ground coffee.

In other words, we need 5.6 ounces of properly-ground coffee per 96 ounces of water.

CAN I ADJUST MY COFFEE RATIO TO TASTE?

Of course! Afterall, everyone's flavor palate is a little bit different. If you read around online, its not uncommon to find coffee-to-water ratio recommendations ranging from 1:15 - 1:17. If you desire a bit more of a stronger, bolder flavored cup of coffee consider trying 1:15 ratio. Enjoy!
